Shadows: Woodless Graphite

Watercolor paper and woodless graphite pencils – that was all I had with me when I decided to draw this rose.  I didn’t have the right kind of pencils to finish the drawing that I had already started.  I usually use the grid method to draw the outline, just to save time, but I didn’t have my ruler either, so I drew it freehand.  Freehand drawing was all I did, at one point!  Needless to say, it is a great way to become conscious of proportion, angles and so on.

I love these pencils because they are exceptionally smooth and produce deep shades without heavy application.  To employ a full range of values creates strong contrast against a white background.  For this drawing, I used HB, 2, 4, and 6B pencils.  Next to Inktense pencils, these pencils might actually be my favorite!
